Kingdom Momentum 2011 with Ron Carpenter – A Thirsty Soul
There is something happening in ministries today that is scaring me: they are falling apart. When you get
under pressure, be careful who you judge. Write down the 5 things that bless you; and the 5 things that
drain you. Both should be equal; 50% - 50% You can’t put $49 in the bank and continually withdraw $51.
It will drain you. My experience has become your wisdom.
“A Thirsty Soul”
Your soul is wild, but your mind, emotions… Be led by your Spirit. Your soul cannot be trusted. You have
to manage your thoughts. If you say, “I don’t have any negative thought,” then you’re a liar. You make l
ifelong decisions out of temporary feelings. The soul has to be shepherded by the Spirit. When your Spirit
is drained, your soul takes over.
John 4:1-24 (New King James Version) - A Samaritan Woman Meets Her Messiah
1 Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made
and baptized more disciples than John
2 (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples),
3 He left Judea and departed again to Galilee.
4 But He needed to go through Samaria.
5 So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar,
near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey,
sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water.
Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him,
“How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?”
For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said to her,
“If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you,
‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him,
and He would have given you living water.”
11 The woman said to Him,
“Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep.
Where then do You get that living water?
12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well,
and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered and said to her,
“Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,
14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.
But the water that I shall give him will become in him a
fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water,
that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”
16 Jesus said to her,
“Go, call your husband, and come here.”
17 The woman answered and said,
“I have no husband.”
Jesus said to her,
“You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’
18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband;
in that you spoke truly.”
19 The woman said to Him,
“Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain,
and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”
21 Jesus said to her,
“Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain,
nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship,
for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers
will worship the Father in spirit and truth;
for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
This woman went to Jesus. Jesus had a legitimate need: water, well. The woman had a legitimate need
too: love, but from a man. And Jesus said as long as you keep going to the men, you are never going to
be satisfied. But Jesus said, “I’ve got water. That will heal that thing inside you. You are hunting for
something eternal, but getting it in temporary places.”
Jesus said, “You have a legitimate need, but you are meeting it the wrong way. Change wells and your
need will be met.”
The Bible says, “Out of the heart, flows the issues of life.” That’s why God says, “Guard your heart.” Quit
complaining when God starts using you. Your gift is not for you, but to shine for others. You have to qualify
people that you let into your life.
Everybody has a gift, but I look at your FRUIT. I have to SEE your fruit. Guard your heart with all diligence.
The devil did not create your issues; your heart did. Guard your heart – don’t let those bad seeds get
planted. Your heart (soil) produces whatever you drop into it.
David said, “Create in me a clean heart.” He didn’t say, “I rebuke you devil and witchcraft.” That had
nothing to do with it.
Sin is action against God. Iniquity is the propensity of your natural bloodline. Iniquity means to be twisted
or bent. Transgressions… the outward conduct of sin. Jesus was bruised for your iniquities – He bled on
the inside for the things that you had on the inside.
I love to challenge theology. I’m going to challenge it.
Bent. Twisted. My first father, Adam, caused us to be born, messed up. The devil doesn’t just want to
curse you… he wants to curse generations of your family. But, there is a blessing that grows with each
generation.
When we’re born into the world, we are born empty. We need acceptance, approval, encouragement,
security, comfort, respect, attention, appreciation, support. Our heart is born with needs – a hole in our
heart. The heart is born wicked, but the parents are held responsible for training their children. So, the
parents have been responsible for meeting their needs. And when they don’t meet these needs, you go
out into the world to get them met.
This woman at the well, has a longing and is going to the well and can’t get her needs met. Frustration is
the breeding ground for flesh.
Jesus said you will be known by your fruit.
Pluck out the sprouts in your heart (soil) while they are small. Otherwise, if you wait 20 years, you will need
a bulldozer to get them out. You have allowed them to grow.
When you’re an adult, God is responsible for meeting your needs.
You know why you switch churches after 12 months, can’t keep a job, can’t keep a friend – you’ve got a
hole in your bucket (heart). Preachers – you know why their churches don’t grow? They don’t want to
delegate responsibility, because they want to stay in control. Why? They have a hole in their heart.
Psalm 107:9 (King James Version)
“For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.”
Acceptance.
Approval.
Encouragement.
Security.
Affection.
Support.
Comfort.
Respect.
Attention.
Appreciation.
Nobody else can fill those things... only God.
