Genesis 37:2-5 (Amplified Bible)
“This is the history of the descendants of Jacob and this is Jacob's line. Joseph, when he was seventeen years old, was shepherding the flock with his brothers; the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's [secondary] wives; and Joseph brought to his father a bad report of them.
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a [distinctive] long tunic with sleeves.
But when his brothers saw that their father loved [Joseph] more than all of his brothers, they hated him and could not say, Peace [in friendly greeting] to him or speak peaceably to him.
Now Joseph had a dream and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him still more.”
Joseph, it states in the Bible, is 17 years old. He dreamed a dream. And his brothers sold him. So, his path in life didn’t start off the way he thought. You may go through a valley while on this journey. All we can see is the trees, but you need to continue until you reach the top of the mountain.
Genesis 37:10 (Amplified Bible)
“And he told it to his father [as well as] his brethren. But his father rebuked him and said to him, What is the meaning of this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers actually come to bow down ourselves to the earth and do homage to you?”
Sometimes it is those closest to you that try to hinder you. Joseph had to continue to believe that what he dreamed would come true. Sometimes people just need a word of encouragement to start/continue their dream. We need to listen to people. Even Joseph’s father rebuked him about the dream.
Genesis 37:24 (Amplified Bible)
“Then they took him and cast him into the [well-like] pit which was empty;
there was no water in it.”
Setbacks always come. Sometimes we take little or short term setbacks, and bring them over to our life plans. Other times, we hit a roadblock, and we just want to give up. It takes time.
The biggest setback? TIME
Sometimes we can’t get to where we are supposed to be, unless we work on it. Joseph’s life included peaks and valleys: 1) He was thrown in a pit. 2) He was sold. 3) He was falsely accused.
Too many times, we let the disappointments/valley influence us… when God may be showing us something. Learn from the things/places you are in. We need to learn to hear from God in the good times and the bad times. When God gives you an answer, it can be like a washing over you… like a waterfall... renewing.
Joseph was doing what he was supposed to do and was knocked down several times, but it all prepared him for the dream he had when he was 17 years old.
Genesis 42:9 (Amplified Bible)
“And Joseph remembered the dreams he had dreamed about them…”
He rose to power at age 30. His dream was fulfilled around the age of 37. It took 20+ years for Joseph’s dream to be fulfilled.
Sometimes we put God on a really short timeline. Joseph could have given up on his dream, but he didn’t, knowing God was faithful. Just as Jesus, Jesus was not ready to fulfill his purpose until the age of 33. Even though He taught the Word, and WAS the Word, as a teenager, His purpose was not fulfilled until much later.
We have to wait, not just on circumstances, but on God, or on people (these may be the people God is working on), and then we can move into our position.
