Faith is always faith in God. Action may appear to onlookers as self-confidence, but it is God-confidence. Conviction that God is with you inspires deeds that normally would not be dared. Self-confidence borders on egotistical pride.
The two forms of confidence are exemplified particularly in 1 Samuel 17. Goliath trusted in his own bulk and prowess. David said “You come against me with sword, spear and javelin.” Israel’s unarmed adolescent as a challenger looked like a studied insult to Goliath. “Am I a dog that you come at me with sticks?” But David did not come with sticks. He said “I come in the name of the Lord Almighty.”
David’s trust in God made it an unequal duel – Goliath against God, an immortal story. Whether the stone that killed Goliath traveled with supernatural force or not, David knew it could be so.
Faith brings more than confidence. It brings God on your side and taps Divine resources. Men and women excel, do better than their best. Faith allows God to change providence and to go into miracle action Himself.
Blessed?
