Now, notice what happened. I’m going to describe this and hope you can get a picture of this so you’ll never forget it.
John 19:1 (KJV)
Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
Pilate ordered Jesus to be scourged. According to Bible scholars, and one of them I had the actual opportunity to meet (Finis Dake) who was the author and publisher of the Dake’s Bible, begins to describe the difference between a scourge and a whip. Here’s what He said:
· “A scourge is not the same as a whip. It is a hydra-headed object with a thick handle and 39 long branches with some dangerous objects, like small stones, bones and metal, fastened to the ends of it.”
Now, you’re familiar with the term ‘a cat of nine tails.’ Not a whip, but it had 39 long branches with metals and stone and really sharp objects. Now, here’s what happened in that day when there was an order given for someone to be scourged:
1) The prisoner is stripped. What did I say? Stripped.
2) Tied face down.
3) And the scourge is brutally applied to the bare flesh.
4) As this hydra-headed scourge lands on the victim’s body, it is pulled in such a way that the vicious objects at the end of each branch would tear off some flesh and then the Blood would gush out. So, when it was released, the 39 tails with the objects would go into the man’s flesh and then when it was pulled back, it would literally pull flesh off. Did you get that picture?
The flesh would be pulled off!! I want you to imagine a knife, 39 times going into your back and then when you pull it off, you are RIPPING flesh! And then the Blood gushes out. Imagine what that looked like from the back. Ripping the flesh and the Blood just gushing out everywhere. It’s not the pretty little thing you see on TV of Jesus being whipped. It messed His body up so much He couldn’t even be recognized! The brutal treatment that was dished out to Jesus, He was so battered He couldn’t easily be recognized. The Scripture says in
Isaiah 52:14
As many were astonished at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men
What he was saying, there was nobody that was so messed up in appearance like Jesus was!
