I Thessalonians 5:6-7:
Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep
at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night.
So if the world is asleep, you and I are…say it, AWAKE! If the world is drunk, you and I are…sober. Now, again I’m talking to you about the inward condition. Yes, this would apply outwardly as well, but that’s not my message to you today. But listen to me. If this world is drunk, you and I are to be sober. Now I don’t have much or any experience with being drunk, Praise God, but I have witnessed it before and I’m sure you have too. Somebody who is drunk, what do they lack?
They lack the ability, in my estimation the ability to do 3 things:
1) the ability to think straight,
2) the ability to speak straight,
3) the ability to walk straight.
Somebody who is drunk, out of their mind drunk, can’t think straight. Do you know how crucial it is in the time that you and I live in that we have the ability to think straight? How much confidence would you have in life if your thoughts were always right in line with the Word of God…if you ALWAYS had your mind on the Word.
If a situation presented itself and instead of allowing it to just drag your thoughts through the mud and you think of every worst possible scenario, you know, everything that could go wrong and think it and you think it until finally you begin to speak it, speak it and then it becomes a reality. Instead of going down that road, what do you supposed would happen if a challenge presented itself to you and IMMEDIATELY you set your mind on things ABOVE?
That’s what it is to be sober. I’m not talking to you about being a boring person. What I’m saying to you, you and I must possess the ability to THINK the Word of God. To THINK what Jesus has accomplished. Set your mind on it and there are times when the Lord just – He overwhelms your thoughts with His goodness, His faithfulness to you, but there are other times you MUST CALL on that and you sense yourself beginning to think along the lines of lack, you think along the lines of sickness, you know that worst possible scenario and the MOMENT you do by the Spirit of God you arrest yourself and you set your mind on things above. Because if this world is drunk, you and I are to be sober.
The ability to think straight and when you get your THOUGHTS straight, then your WORDS become straight and you SPEAK the Word of God. And when you set your mind on this [Holy Bible], you begin to speak it. You set your limitations:
'I will NOT let anything out of my mouth that does not line up with what God has already said
about me and my life and who I am.'
And when you begin thinking straight, then you begin thinking straight and that will cause you to begin walking that line of the Word of God. If the world is asleep, you and I are awake. If the world is drunk, you and I are sober and have the ability to think straight, speak straight, walk straight.
There’s supposed to be a difference.
I Thessalonians 5:5, ‘You are of the Light; not of the darkness. You are of the day; not of the night.’ The difference between you and this world is supposed to be night and day. That kind of pronounced difference between us and that begins on the inside. Now, this world is marked by uncertainty. They don’t know where they’re going. The government has no idea what’s next. The news over and over says,
‘We don’t know what’s going to happen.’
Everybody is uncertain about everything. And if you and I are going to be different then we MUST be marked by our boldness and our certainty in our God! That is where we will be going in these messages. I want us to learn from the Word of God how to live lives of boldness and certainty of who we are in Him. I want to teach you how to be bold beyond uncertainty.
